'Ultralight': a short documentary on the ultralight movement by The Dyneema® Project

The Netherlands, 5 January 2016

A silent revolution is changing the outdoor industry. Some call it ‘the Ultralight movement’. New, extremely light and durable backpacks, tents and tarps, sleeping bags and clothing have been available for a few years now. These products have been winning editors awards from outdoor blogs, as well as being raved about by early adopters. Ultralight gear is radically changing the hiking and climbing experience.

The Dyneema® Project launches the first in a series of short documentaries. Titled ULTRALIGHT, it focusses on three entrepreneurs of the Ultralight movement while honoring each and every trailblazer in this segment. The Ultralight movement is fueled by Dyneema® Flexible Composites, a revolutionary strong and lightweight fabric formerly known as Cuben fiber.

Conventional base packs weigh around 45lb. Ultralight hikers carry less than 15lb. It’s the cottage companies, with direct to consumer sales models and production in the US, which are at this stage buying the high performance Dyneema flexible composites in order to develop the most advanced gear available. This combination of new technologies, new business models and local production is redefining the outdoor market . Even though they may be responsible for a small share of the total outdoor product market, which totals at a staggering 120.7 billion USD in the US alone, these niche companies have grown and continue to grow rapidly. These innovators have embraced Dyneema® – because they understand from personal experience that every ounce counts.

ULTRALIGHT zooms in on Mike St. Pierre of Hyperlite Mountain Gear, Gen Shimizu of Yama and Ron Bell of Mountain Laurel Designs. Shot in the nature of Maine and Virginia it’s a testimonial to innovation, technology and sustainability in its truest sense. High performance long lasting gear made with a fiber with one of the most minimal footprints in the industry.

Dyneema® will be attending the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market Tradeshow, held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Dyneema® Project will be actively scouting there for companies for further collaborations. Visit Dyneema® at booth 41047.
